IELTS or PTE, which one is better?

With 15 years of experience teaching IELTS and the past five years dedicated to PTE, I often encounter students hesitant to explore a new test. However, I firmly advocate for the PTE test as it offers several advantages over IELTS:

Firstly, PTE delivers results in less than 48 hours for 80% of cases, contrasting with IELTS, where results can take up to 13 days to arrive. Even the new computer-based IELTS provides results no sooner than 5 days.

Secondly, achieving an 8 band average score in PTE is notably easier than in IELTS, particularly in the writing section.

Thirdly, while IELTS tests are primarily available on Saturdays from 9 to 12, excluding the speaking test, PTE tests are offered daily and can be completed within 2.45 to 3.15 hours, inclusive of the speaking section.

Fourthly, PTE provides a wide range of test times, spanning from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening, allowing candidates to select the most convenient time slot.

Lastly, while IELTS assesses candidates on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, PTE evaluates candidates on these four skills as well as six additional subskills: grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse. This comprehensive assessment ensures a more thorough evaluation of candidates’ language proficiency.

In summary, the PTE test offers faster results, easier scoring criteria, greater flexibility in test scheduling, and a more comprehensive assessment of language skills compared to IELTS.
