Do we have negative marking in PTE?

Yes, PTE candidates do get negative marking for wrong answers in certain PTE test items. This article will take a look at these questions.

1. Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers (Reading)

In the Reading section, PTE candidates will get 2-3 MCCMA questions. A passage with a maximum of 200 words will be presented to the PTE candidates. Based on a question, the candidates need to find more than one answer that would address the question. If a candidate gets one of the answers wrong, then it would cancel out the point for one of the other correct ones. But if a PTE candidate gets all of the MCCMA questions of the Reading section wrong, then points will be deducted from the overall score of the reading section.

2. Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers (Listening)

In the Listening section, PTE candidates will get 2-3 MCCMA questions. After an audio or a video clip is played, the candidates can choose more than one answer that would meet the criteria of the question. If a candidate gets one of the answers wrong, then it would cancel out the point for one of the other correct ones. But if a PTE candidate gets all of the MCCMA questions of the Listening section wrong, then points will be deducted from the overall score of the Listening section.

3. Highlight incorrect words

In this part of the Listening section, an audio is played a long with its transcription. PTE candidates need to check the words in the audio with that of the transcription. If they find a word that does not match the one in the transcription, they choose that word by clicking on it. That clicked word will turn yellow which means it has been selected. If PTE candidates choose words that are the same as the one in the audio, that highlighted word is considered a wrong answer and a point will be deducted from the overall points of this section.
