From the 16th of November, 2021, PTE candidates will sit the new shorter PTE academic test. This change will definitely help the PTE candidates to achieve better scores. In this post, I will talk about the new shorter PTE test and why I think it will have a positive impact on the PTE candidates test results. So, let’s get started!
What’s new about the new test?
There is nothing new about the shorter PTE test. As the name implies, it is shorter than its predecessor which took around three hours to complete. The new shorter test, however, takes around 2 hours to complete. To make the test shorter, they had to reduce the number of questions in a few test items and delete an optional section of the test.
What test items have been reduced in numbers?
Speaking
In the Speaking module, the following test items have been reduced in numbers;
Describe image from 6-7 to 3-4,
Retell lecture from 3-4 to 1-2 and
Answer short questions from 10-12 to 5-6 questions.
Writing
In the Writing module, the following test items have been reduced in numbers;
Summarize written text from 2-3 to 1-2 questions.
Reading
In the Reading module, the following test items have been reduced in numbers;
Multiple choice, multiple answers from 2-3 to 1-2
and Multiple choice, single answer from 2-3 to 1-2 questions.
Listening
In the Listening module, the following test items have been reduced in numbers;
Summarize spoken text from 2-3 to 1-2
Multiple choice, multiple answers from 2-3 to 1-2
Highlight correct summary from 2-3 to 1-2
Multiple choice, single answer from 2-3 to 1-2
and Select missing word from 2-3 to 1-2 questions.
What section has been deleted in the new PTE version?
Only the 10-minute optional break at the end of the Reading module and the beginning of the Listening module has been deleted. So, now the whole test is done in one go without any stoppage or break.
